VO The governments of Laos and Costa Rica establish diplomatic relations
INTRO: The governments of Laos and Costa Rica signed a joint communiqué on the establishment of diplomatic relations on September 28.
STORY: On behalf of the Lao government, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Thongloun Sisoulith, signed the joint communiqué with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Costa Rica, Manuel A. Gonzalez Sanz. The signing ceremony took place at the United Nations office in New York, witnessed by Lao and Costa Rican diplomatic officials.
With this latest signing, Laos now has diplomatic ties with 139 nations. Of these, 24 countries have set up embassies in Vientiane and four have established consulates. Laos has also set up 27 embassies, three representative offices, eight general consulates, 1 consulate office and 15 honorary consulates abroad.
Costa Rica is a Democratic Republic with the President as head of State.
The country is located in Central America and has coastlines on the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean. The population exceeds 4.8 million and the capital is named San José.
Costa Rica also shares a border with Nicaragua to the north and Panama to the south. GDP per capita reached about US,700 in 2014.
